Childhood Memories

What are some special childhood memories you can share in our lounge?

I thought it would be interesting to share some of my childhood memories. As I have mentioned to some of you, I was brought up by my grandparents. I used to spend a great deal of time with them, especially with my grandpa. We would do a lot of things together. We really enjoyed having a sunbath in the mornings. I had a lot of fun with my grandpa. We would dance and laugh all the time.

On the other hand, I remember that my grandma used to dress me up in a very cute way. My mom would send fancy outfits for me from the States, and my grandma simply loved all of them. She would do my hair and take pictures. I used to wear fancy outfits most of the time.

Finally, I remember that I mentioned to you that I did not like playing dolls. I had a few Barbie dolls, however, my favorite ways to have fun were riding my motorcycle and my bicycle. My uncle sent the motorcycle as a present for me. I really loved it! I would ride it everyday. Likewise, the bicycle was a present, but for my birthday. It was really difficult to learn how to ride it, additionally I still have a couple of scars on my legs from falling off the bicycle.

I am not 100% sure what my earliest childhood memories are, but the ones I shared with you are definitely the ones I truly cherish. Now I 'd like you to listen to 5 speakers sharing about their earliest childhood memories.  Then, you will listen to John Fisher's interview. He points out very interesting facts about how people are able to recall early memories and what they are related to.

  1. 1.- I think we can remember only a special moment, I don’t know anyone how remember since they were two or three years old
2.- For me, it’s depend of what kind of personality we have. For example an independent person remember when he learned how to rode a bike, or if the person were emotional maybe remember when he had his first love
3.- In my case I remember visual and smell moments, I love cook and sometimes some smells remember my childhood when I eating my grandma food’s or when I saw a picture I could remember these moment.
4.- When I was six years old, I had a difficult moment to learn the number six, I confused for the number nine, and it was the first time my dad grounded me

  2. My first memories are when I was about 5-6 years old, I don´t haver erlier memories.

Now I know that people remember at most, events with strong emotions, like, happiness, unhappiness, accidents, someones death or birdt, specialy of brothers or nuclear family.

Our first mamories are always visuals. The experts said.

    1. I don´t have any memories about soprised feelings.
    2. About feeling pain I remembered the history that I already told in class, when I was 5-6 years old, we used to walk to the kindergarden like 3 blocks, but I remembered that I fell down every corner, so when I finally arrived, may knees was always hurted and it was in the morning and at noon.
    3. About feeling shame, I remembered when we (my sister and I) get in into a big school, I felt shame because we didn´t studied before, because when my mother tried to take us to the kindergarden we (my sis and I) agreed, Lucia let´s cry. Ok, she told me, so we cried all the morning long. After a week the theacher told my mother that we wern´t able to be at the kindergarden.

The most important incident that I remembered, was the earthquake of 1976, but not because it was a tragedy (thank God), I was 5 years old and fortunately in my family we didn´t have any human lost, only material ones. In fact because it was the first time all the family camp togheter, and it was exiting to live like 15 days in one uncles house, where we were camping with all the cousins, it was really exiting, be playing all day in the garden, sleeping in tents or in cars.

  3. 1.- I thought that our first memories were of when we were more than five or six years old, I don't think we can remember something that happened when we were 2 years old. But he said it could happen and that 80% of people can remember, maybe if their memories were strong emotions or something that affected them too much, I think it can be possible.
Because in my case, my brother was born when I was 2 years old and I can't remember it.

2.- Well, he said that the emotions that we can remember are about strong emotions like happiness, unhappiness, pain, surprise or fear. In my case it would be happiness, when my little sister was born and I was 8 years old.

3.- Our first memories are mostly visuals, not sounds or smells, because I think we can easily remember a place where we were many years ago and not so easy to remember sounds or smells that we can easily forget. For example, when I was like 6 years old, my brother and I sometimes watched some musical videos, and I only remember some images from the video, I can't remember the song.

4.- Maybe the earliest memory that I have it's when we moved to the place we are living now, I was 4 years old and I can remember that I used to play with my brother all the day. We had too much fun.

  4. 1.I think that it depends of the person because some persons had a very good memory, but most of the people remember a lot of things like when they have 5 or 6 years old because probably that ages the people started to have a lot of adventures in their lifes.
    2. Sometimes they remember good memories because that memories stay for all their lifes, but sometimes they also remember bad memories because this is who they started to realize that life is not easy.
3.Probably both because you can be in a place and you can remember who it was or probably if you go to a restaurant you are going to remember the smell or the taste of the food.
    4. I think that I have 4 years old when this happens. One day I went to the bathroom when suddenly a boy that I hate appears he challenge me to climb the stairs, I do it because I wasn´t a girl that cares of something, when I climb all the stairs, suddenly the principal saw me so I had a punishment because of that incident.

  5. How far back in our lives can we usually remember?
I think that we could remember very well when we were like 9 years old, because in this moment is where we are aware about our life....but of course that is posible to remember before this moments and that is because we can remember a special moment that gave us a brand in our mind forever.

What kinds of emotions or events are people most likely to remember?

I think that the most common events that people remember could be:
    when they were playing
    The birthdays´ partys

Are our first memories mostly visual or of sounds and smells?

Im not sure, but I read in one article, that the memories about smells are more stronger than the visual´s memories.
So I think that ours first memories (for us) could be visuals but unconsciously the memories about smells could give us more information than the visuals.

Do you have any very early memories of the feelings or incidents below? Do you approximately remember how old you were at the time?

I remember that when I was like 6 years old, My parents gave me on the christmas night some present that for me were like the worst presents of all my christmas´ nights.
the presents were 2 toys, they were cars of plastic but they were very ugly, I remember that I started to crying, and later I was verry angry with my parents...but of course that now I Know that, that my ideas about christmas was wrong...and come on!..I was a child, the happiness for me at those times were the toys of the christmas night...Do not judge me please.
