Time Issues

How many of you have suffered inconveniences related to time?

Well, in my case I like to be punctual and feel frustrated when I don't make it to a place on time. Another issue for me is, not having enough time to finish tasks. I sometimes feel I have so much on my plate, and even when I try my best organizing the important first, the urgent takes over. That is what I can say on my side. Now, in general, I really dislike it when meeting don't start on time. That, for me, is very disrespectful. Having to wait in line at the bank is also another waste of time, when we can use online banking. Time is so precious and every minute counts. Unfortunately, not only delays or long lines take away time, also a surprise visit, an unexpected call, or someone who needs your help in the last minute.
Listen to the following radio show and pay attention to the advice given by the time management guru Richard. Which situation do you relate to? What advice would you give the callers?
Make sure your writing is organized and that is no less than 250 words. This is your writing assessment of September.

Historical Movies

This week we'll be sharing about Historical Movies. This movie genre sets the events of the movie in a specific time in History. Not only it provides us details about what happened during that point in History, but it also narrates a story. Sometimes it can be a fiction story about romance, friendship or success and other times it focuses on someones life and achievements.

Producers need to consider several aspects when it comes to Historical movies. Some aspects include setting, costumes, music, effects, and even language! As language varies form time to time.
I am not a critic, but there have been cases in which some of those factors are not well taken care of. However, that is not the only thing. Producers also need to be careful with events that where taking place during that time if they want an accurate historical movie.

  • Do you think it is important to follow the timeline in History for the movie to be successful? or
  • Do you think some facts or events can be altered for the movie to gain more popularity?
  • If you could produce a Historical movie of your own, what event in History would you focus on?
I am sharing a link where you can find some examples of Historical movies. Tell us which ones you like.

Breaking up!

Are break ups hard?

When it is time to bring a relationship to an end it takes deep thought to find the right words to avoid hurting feelings. Even though it is tough, it has to be done.
The first question is, are there "the right words?" I mean, there are several reasons for a break up, some can be friendly due to mutual agreement, but others are rough and both sides can leave very hurt.
The second question is, who takes the lead? Sometimes it is YOU, who has to find the words and choose the moment to talk to your partner and tell them it is all over.
I had to break up a couple of times. I really hated it, but it was necessary. I was not happy and I had to let my couple about it. It was very annoying because both times the guy cried. However, I had to be strong to show them that it was a final decision. I haven't gone through the experience of someone breaking up with me. Which is good! But, I can imagine how sad it can be.
What about you? What are the words you can use? Have you broken up with someone or the other way around? How was it? What do you suggest can be done when breaking up is hard?
Take a few minutes to this classic break up song!

A childhood full of memories...

Are you ready to show off your English skills as a movie writer?
In this week's blog you will have the opportunity to be a movie writer.
The English skills you need to show focus on the use of Narrative Tenses.
You also need to demonstrate your creativity and writing organization skills.

Do you remember movies like Stand By Me? It tells the story of four boys in a small town in Oregon who go on a hike to find the dead body of a missing child. Too dramatic? How about The Sandlot? It is a story about a group of young boys growing up in California in 1962. A new, shy boy (Thomas Guiry) moved into the neighborhood, where he was initially rejected by the local boys because he didn't know how to play baseball. Soon, he learned the sport and joined the group of boys who played ball in a local sandlot, and with his new friends, he has a variety of adventures. By the way, the song Tequila is part of the soundtrack of this movie.  How about The Goonies. I really loved them. They were able to save their neighborhood from being foreclosed. Last but not least, I can recall The Little Rascals. In this movie a tough little gang of boys, who have a Women Haters Club, participate in a car race to get funds to build a better club house.

I am sharing some examples, because the idea is that you can share your very own movie trailer in Narrative Tenses about your own group of children. The movie trailer can be inspired on your own childhood experiences, or you can simply invent your own.

Write your movie entries here, give your classmates feedback throughout the week. I can't wait to check out your movies. Invent a creative title for your movie, and don't forget that you will be sharing about it in class.

Getting to know you

When a good deal of time will be spent in the same class with the same group, it is important to share a little about each other. You might not care who you are with every Saturday, however, it is nice to know likes and dislikes, hobbies, a little bit about your jobs and perhaps your family. It is not necessary to provide details. You are allowed to share what you feel like sharing. Let me start.

I have been a teacher for 16 years. I never thought of becoming one, but those are the things one discovers on the way. I truly enjoy it! I have met a lot of people and have lived many nice experiences being a teacher. I have taught preschool, elementary, teens, adults, and even seniors. I don't have an age group of preference, I simply love teaching! I completed my bachelor degree in Technology and  English teaching. I also finished my master in e-Learning. I am currently taking courses on coding and a little bit of animation. I can't stop learning.

On the other hand, I love spending time with my family. Even though we don't have as much time as I wish, because we are involved in many activities, we enjoy traveling around Guatemala. We all like nature, therefore we usually visit natural parks and other tourist places in  Guate. My three kids have a lot of fun, since they really love the places we visit.

Tu sum up, I'd like to tell you some of my likes and dislikes. Whenever I can, I totally go for some time by myself reading a good piece and enjoying a fine drink. You know what they say, "everybody needs some time on their own". I like eating out with friends, although I can't do it that often. I like listening to music. What would life be without music? I love almost every genre and I typically select the genre according to my mood or occasion. There are some days I feel retro, so I go back in time through music. On the contrary, there are a few things I dislike. I dislike gossiping, watching soap operas, reggaeton, negative and untruthful people.

Is there anything else you would like to learn about your teacher? Go ahead and ask! I will be happy to share, as long as it is not too personal. Include your expectations about this course.  Remember we all want to learn about you as well, so begin typing!

Thinking for Tomorrow

Everyone, when we were children, had a goal or a "dream" about what we wanted to be tomorrow, those kinds of dreams gave us the energy to continue fighting day by day. Sometimes the way to success may be hard, but in the end, as soon as it can be, we will be in the place where we wanted to be. Of course, it will happen if we don´t surrender; and this is one of the secrets of  success: Never give up!, If you fall 100 times, get up 100 times. If  life hits you, don´t give up, and keep going in the fight. Your fight. Sometimes obstacles in life may be the bad opinion of people, and  sometimes it  gives us a sudden "end" in ours plans. It does not matter!  If we know what we want and how we are going to make it, we don´t have to think about what  people say about our lives or ideas. The worst obstacle for us is our own opinion. This is the worst obstacle to find ours goals, because we don´t believe in ourselves. We  have to trust in ourselves and keep working for our future.

So, those words can tell you  what we are going to talk about this week , and it is about "goals", share in the comments (in general) about your goals from short to long term, and how you want to reach them. (Required, use 2 or more phrases of discourse markers)

In my case, I want to finish the university to continue studying a master´s degree and later try to find a job that doesn´t have relation with Telecommunications.
To do it, I´m going to get better scores to get a scholarship in another country like Japan, because I think that it is a good place to continue studying. In fact, I think that this culture can teach us good things. As I was saying, later I want to create a business or try to find a job that I like.

It sounds great!

Music is the art of combining diferent sounds. Everyone  listens to music, but sometimes some songs are special either for the lyrics or for the rhythm.
Some lyrics try  to express diferent situations about experiences of life; some refer to diferent feelings like love, hate, sadness, happiness, etc . Other lyrics don´t have any meaning and just try give more rhythm to the song;  On the other hand,, the rhythm is very important to make a great song too; the different instruments and melodies can play an important rol in the production of music.

The criterion to decide what song could be the best depends on each one.
For me, my favorite song could be "Ordinary World" of  "Duran Duran" because I like the rhythm and  I think that the lyric is great too.

So share in the comments what is your favorite song and why.

Childhood Memories

What are some special childhood memories you can share in our lounge?

I thought it would be interesting to share some of my childhood memories. As I have mentioned to some of you, I was brought up by my grandparents. I used to spend a great deal of time with them, especially with my grandpa. We would do a lot of things together. We really enjoyed having a sunbath in the mornings. I had a lot of fun with my grandpa. We would dance and laugh all the time.

On the other hand, I remember that my grandma used to dress me up in a very cute way. My mom would send fancy outfits for me from the States, and my grandma simply loved all of them. She would do my hair and take pictures. I used to wear fancy outfits most of the time.

Finally, I remember that I mentioned to you that I did not like playing dolls. I had a few Barbie dolls, however, my favorite ways to have fun were riding my motorcycle and my bicycle. My uncle sent the motorcycle as a present for me. I really loved it! I would ride it everyday. Likewise, the bicycle was a present, but for my birthday. It was really difficult to learn how to ride it, additionally I still have a couple of scars on my legs from falling off the bicycle.

I am not 100% sure what my earliest childhood memories are, but the ones I shared with you are definitely the ones I truly cherish. Now I 'd like you to listen to 5 speakers sharing about their earliest childhood memories.  Then, you will listen to John Fisher's interview. He points out very interesting facts about how people are able to recall early memories and what they are related to.

Please share with us in the comments:
  1. How far back in our lives can we usually remember?
  2. What kinds of emotions or events are people most likely to remember?
  3. Are our first memories mostly visual or of sounds and smells?
  4. Do you have any very early memories of the feelings or incidents below? Do you approximately remember how old you were at the time?
  • feeling surprised
  • feeling pain
  • feeling shame or embarrassment
  • the birth of a brother or a sister
  • a say out
  • managing to do something for the first time
  • the death of a pet
  • a festival or celebration
  • getting a wonderful or disappointing present

Platform Activities - Reading and Listening

PART 1 - READING

CREATING YOUR OWN JOB SATISFACTION

A lot of people think that job satisfaction is only for other people. They look with envy on people who love their jobs and who don’t think of them as work. The idea of earning a living from something you really like doing only applies to a few very lucky people, they think. But this isn’t so. It’s not only people in the so-called “glamour professions,” for example, who can get genuine job satisfaction. You don’t have to be in the arts or a sports person to get enjoyment from what you do for a living. Even if you’re in a boring job, it’s quite possible to get some satisfaction from it.
The key to this is your attitude. You may think it’s unlikely that you can derive much satisfaction from a dull job that doesn’t require much thought and that involves a lot of routine procedures. But if you approach it with the right attitude, and put some effort in, you may be surprised at how enjoyable you can make it. Of course, if you just sit there telling yourself how boring your job is, you’ll never get anything out of it. But if you set out to find ways of making it enjoyable, there’s a good chance you’ll manage to.
One thing you can do is to set yourself challenges. Think about what you can do for yourself to make your work a little bit more interesting. If you’ve got a repetitive job, set yourself some targets to meet and try to beat your previous records. Or use your initiative in other ways. Think about ways you could develop your career into more interesting areas – see how you could improve your skills by doing a course, for example, or look into new skills you could get that would stand you in good stead for the future.
For some people, it’s not boredom that’s the problem, it’s the fact that their jobs involve a significant amount of unpleasantness. But if you keep telling yourself your job is horrible and there’s nothing you can do about it, you’ll get stuck in a rut and you’ll never get out of it. Focus on developing a positive attitude and try to keep any negative thoughts about your job out of your mind. Keep a sense of perspective – if something’s gone wrong on a particular day, decide whether it really matters or not. If it isn’t actually all that important, don’t dwell on it, let it go. Learn from it, and take an upbeat view of what’s happened – you’ll know how to avoid the problem in the future, or what to do about it if it happens again.
Of course, you may reach the point where you feel totally trapped in a job. If this mindset starts to overwhelm you, check out the options you may have in the place where you work. Map out a plan for improving your situation there. Are there other roles in the organization you could apply for? Could you ask to be given different tasks? Could you get a different kind of assignment or go to another department where your skills are required? Finding out there are other options will give you a sense of control over your own working life. Even if you have no job satisfaction right now, you’ll feel better if you know that there is a realistic prospect of work that gives you a degree of it.
Expectations are another key ingredient in job satisfaction. Take a long hard look at what you really are capable of. Sometimes it’s important to accept that you couldn’t really do the much more interesting or high-powered job you aspire to. Try to be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses. Focus on the things you really are good at, rather than on things that, if you’re really honest with yourself, you couldn’t actually do. Make the most of your situation and feel good about what you can do, rather than feeling bad about what you can’t do.
Work is a very important part of most people’s lives and it’s important to get at least some satisfaction from it. If you really dislike your time at work, the rest of your life is affected too, and you can easily get a negative outlook on life in general. It’s in your own hands to avoid this. Even if you can’t get the job of your dreams, you can take steps to create your own job satisfaction.

TASK: In the comments, write your personal summary about the reading. Make sure you include the main idea and supporting details.

PART 2 - LISTENING

Listen to 5 people talking about jobs and their disadvantages.  After listening leave a post with your answers:

Who talks about? (Write Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc)

A lack of job security
B the possibility of making a serious mistake
C having to work at inconvenient times
D bad treatment from employers
E having to work in unpleasant physical conditions
F other people’s low opinion of the job
G having to be dishonest
H the need to cooperate with colleagues

Why do you want to become English proficient?

As an English teacher I have noticed that more and more people are interested in learning the language. I had no idea of how many people in Guatemala already speak the language at some level. Recently I read an article about a research that puts Guatemala in the 4th place of Latin american English speaking countries. You can check the article here.
Those are good news for our country. I am sure we can continue heading to the top. Not only learning English opens doors to many opportunities, it also contributes to our brain´s health.  In fact, there are studies that explain the benefits of a bilingual brain. To understand better you can watch the following video:
Now, I would like you to share.
Please write a  paragraph to answer the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to become English proficient?
  2. What are some obstacles you have faced during you English learning process?
  3. How can you motivate someone who does not like English?
Remember that you participation has a grade. I invite you to use your connectors to practice them

Leave your answers in the comments.
